DANZIG were only six songs into their
free concert--held in the parking lot of Aron’s Records in Hollywood on Devil’s Night
(10/30)--when police abruptly shut the event down. Their problem: the noise and the crowd of
1500 fans which spilled onto Highland Avenue, stopping traffic in both directions. The band’s
manager was nearly arrested by the police who felt he was being uncooperative, while helicopters
flew overhead shining their spotlight on the assembled (and moshing) throng. The whole fracas was
captured on film by a crew who happened to be in the area from “L.A.P.D,” the UPN “reality”
television show.
This intense event marked the fourth of DANZIG’s nine scheduled in-stores planned in celebration
of the release of BLACKACIDEVIL, their first for Hollywood Records. At the in-store signing after
the concert, GLENN DANZIG and his cohorts--TOMMY VICTOR (guitar), JOEY
CASTILLO (drums) and JOSH LAZIE (bass)--thanked fans for showing up, explaining the
band’s original plan to perform nine songs. Among the tunes DANZIG did get to play was
BLACKACIDEVIL’s first radio track “Sacrifice,” whose forthcoming video was directed by
GLENN. Following this in-store appearance, DANZIG headed to Detroit on Halloween for
another in-store and a full-on special concert at the State Theatre where the tickets were fittingly
priced at $6.66. Next up for DANZIG: a headlining U.S. tour in January that will follow the band’s
‘96 shows on the “OZZ FEST.” Asked about the bond that exists with his fans, GLENN said,"
There is a deep connection with our fans. I sing about a lot of things other people don’t want to sing
about, or are scared to sing about, because they’re more concerned with selling records than
communicating with their audience. I sing about thinking for yourself, becoming strong--not just
physically, but mentally--and being able to take on the world everyday."
