This is not a reunion in the traditional sense, but this will be the first time Doyle (ex- Misfits guitarist) and Glenn (ex- Misfits frontman) will join together on stage in 20 years. “It’s the closest thing to a Misfits reunion anyone is ever going to see,” states Glenn. The way it will go down is this - about two-thirds of the way through the Danzig set, Doyle will come on stage, and the duo will launch into about 30 minutes worth of Misfits tunes. Laying to rest any angst between the two, Glenn contends, “Doyle and I have always been cordial. He’s a really nice guy and, after talking, we decided it was time we do this…” All this will unfold at what’s billed as “The Blackest of the Black” tour, which kicks off in late September. Sure to appease the darkest of appetites, the lineup consists of black metal legends “Mayhem,” “Devil Driver” (featuring former Coal Chamber frontman Dez Farfara) and a special “Death Angel” reunion. Important for Danzig fans to note, this could be the last time Glenn will be performing. “This is definitely gonna be my last tour for a while,” he reports. “ I may come back, or I may not. The reason is that there are several projects I’ve been meaning to make time for… I want to record Black Aria 2, direct my first feature film and start compiling some unreleased dark blues tunes.” While on tour, Danzig will be promoting new album Circle of Snakes, now available through Danzig’s Evilive label and Regain Records. This latest installation features several cryptic tunes that are psychological in nature. “That’s exactly what I was going for… This album is introspective, challenging the listener to bring a part of themselves into it - to interpret its meaning.” Several songs allude to the struggle between good and evil within us all. “Life is a constant battle,” Glenn notes, “surviving daily life and the battle within yourself… between two polarities.” The album also features an interesting spoken word number called “Skull Forest,” based on a dream where Glenn was walking through a foggy cemetery with people calling out to him from the grave - people he knew that were not dead. Many of his dreams have made it to his songwriting pad, such as the old Misfits’ “20 Eyes,” about a band he saw performing in a dream. He followed them into the garage and stole their song. “But that’s okay,” he chuckles, “because it’s a band I created in my dreams.” Projects on his immediate horizon include adapting one of his comics for a movie. “I have a line of comics called Verotik,” he explains, “and Ge Rouge is one I’ll be adapting into a screenplay.” It will be a turn of the century (1900’s) setting with vampires and zombies and will have the minimum requirement of hacked-up bodies, snake blood and naked women, as one would expect. This will be Glenn’s first shot at directing a live action, full-feature film, though he has experience directing videos. The interview wound down with a few feel-good questions with Glenn mentioning some bands that have influenced him, like Black Sabbath and Velvet Underground. He’s obviously pleased with where he is on his musical journey. “I wanted to create music that would stand the test of time and that people would come back to,” he emphatically says. “And it’s worked out that way, with people continually going back to the old Misfits records.” Overall, he has the resolve of a man who has taken risks, while remaining true to himself. He reports that he is comfortable with his life and grateful for the chance to make music that people still enjoy. He seems to be a great guy, and his parting words to Harder Beat fans were, “Be true to yourself - even if it means taking risks that no one will understand.” |
